Understanding these medications and their potential side effects can help you make informed decisions with your healthcare provider.

Types of Secondary Diabetes Medications

1. Sulfonylureas

Examples: glipizide (Glucotrol), glimepiride (Amaryl), glyburide (DiaBeta, Glynase)

How they work: Stimulate the pancreas to release more insulin

Common side effects:

  • Hypoglycemia (low blood sugar)
  • Weight gain (typically 2-8 pounds)
