With so much attention on GLP-1 medications such as Ozempic and medicines such as Mounjaro (tirzepatide), conversations about type 2 diabetes can focus heavily on a prescription.
I want to bring the benefits of lifestyle changes—nutrition, exercise, and consistent habits—back into that conversation.
At Diabetes Plus with Dave, my approach centers on education, nutrition, exercise, and consistency. These deserve a central place in diabetes care, whether you take medication or not.
Your daily habits are an opportunity to actively invest in your health.
The Benefits of Lifestyle Changes Go Beyond Weight Loss
Weight loss gets plenty of attention. But there are many other reasons to work on your lifestyle.
Regular physical activity can help improve blood sugar, blood pressure, and cholesterol. It can also support better sleep, mood, balance, and heart health. Strength training can help build stronger muscles and bones.
Think about what those benefits could mean in your life: working toward greater strength, finding movement you enjoy, or establishing a routine you feel good about continuing.
Those are meaningful goals alongside the numbers you discuss with your healthcare team.
Healthy Eating Involves More Than Eating Less
A smaller appetite doesn’t automatically tell you how to build a nourishing meal.
Learning about food gives you practical skills: understanding labels, recognizing carbohydrate sources, planning portions, and choosing meals that fit your needs and preferences.
A personalized eating plan can help support blood sugar management and other health goals. A registered dietitian or your healthcare team can help you develop that plan.
My encouragement is to become curious about your food choices. Choose one thing to understand better, then use that knowledge in your next shopping trip or meal.
GLP-1 Medications, Tirzepatide, and the Role of Lifestyle
GLP-1 medications are legitimate treatments. Tirzepatide, the medicine in Mounjaro, acts on both GIP and GLP-1 receptors. Mounjaro is prescribed alongside diet and exercise to improve blood sugar control in type 2 diabetes.
Some medications also offer protection beyond blood sugar management. For example, Ozempic has approved heart and kidney risk-reduction uses in specific groups of adults with type 2 diabetes.
Taking medication does not mean someone has failed. And needing medication does not make lifestyle changes less worthwhile.
My message is this: give your daily habits the attention they deserve as part of your treatment plan.
Build Healthy Habits You Can Repeat
Knowing what you want to change is a beginning. Building a routine takes planning.
Consider a few questions:
- What meal could I plan before my next grocery trip?
- What movement is safe and realistic for my abilities?
- What question should I bring to my next appointment?
- What habit could I practice even during a busy week?
Start with one answer. Make the action specific enough that you know when you’ve done it.
Consistency takes practice, and the plan may need adjustment. Build from what you can realistically repeat.
Make Lifestyle Changes With the Right Support
Changes in food intake and activity can affect blood sugar, especially if you take insulin or certain other diabetes medications. Work with your healthcare team, and have your prescriber guide any medication adjustments.
My role as a Diabetes Wellness Educator and Coach is to help you build understanding, identify practical goals, and work toward consistent habits alongside your medical care team.
You deserve a plan that gives everyday health habits a meaningful place in your life.
